Leona Gom

Leona Gom was born and raised on an isolated farm in northern Alberta, where her parents were homesteaders. She received a B.Ed. and M.A. from the University of Alberta and taught in the English Dept. for two years. In the 1980’s she taught at Kwantlen College in B.C. and was editor and poetry editor for ten years of the award-winning literary magazine Event; she then taught graduate and undergraduate creative writing courses at U.B.C. for two years.

She was writer-in-residence at the University of Alberta in 1987-88, the University of Lethbridge in 1989, the University of Winnipeg in 1990, and Douglas College in 2005. She has published fourteen books and appeared in anthologies and journals in Canada, the U.S., Europe, China, Australia and New Zealand. She has given hundreds of readings, lectures and workshops on writing and has served on about twenty awards panels and juries both nationally and in four provinces. Five of her novels have been translated into other languages. In 1993 the University of Calgary established The Leona Gom Archive.

Land of the Peace won the CAA Award for best poetry book of the year and was short-listed for the Lowther Award. Housebroken was awarded the Ethel Wilson Prize for Fiction. She has also had two full-length radio plays produced by the CBC. Her novels Zero Avenue and The Y Chromosome have been optioned for movies and used as texts for English and sociology courses across Canada and in the U.S.

The Collected Poems

This will be (although poets have said this before and lied) Leona Gom's last book of poetry. All four of her first books Kindling, 1972; The Singletree, 1975; Land of the Peace, 1980; NorthBound, 1984 have now been out of print for some time. Sono Nis Press is proud to issue this definitive collection of the work of one of British Columbia's most popular poets. Her work has been honoured with many awards, including the Canadian Authors' Association poetry award for Land of the Peace and the B.C. Book Prizes Ethel Wilson Award for her first novel Housebroken. She has had two other novels published, Zero Avenue and The Y Chromosome.
